Goulburn’s Southern Meats to wind back lamb and mutton production

HIGH lamb and mutton prices have forced Goulburn’s Southern Meats abattoir to cut its operating days from next week and other processors are expected to follow the company’s lead.

Total Yarding: 11,143

Lamb numbers lifted and the quality remains very mixed with the majority of lambs lacking finish. There were a few well finished lines off grain but were limited. All weights were represented. The market sold to a cheaper trend.

Light restocking lambs to 16kg cwt sold from $64 to $120/head. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg were $7 cheaper on average with the secondary lambs starting at $112/head to the heavier and better finished lambs reached $171/head to average from 660c to 720c/kg cwt. The better lambs sold to 780c/kg cwt. The 22 to 24kg lambs received $164 to $178 and 24 to 26kg lambs $180 to $188/head averaging 740c to 765c/kg cwt slipping $4/head on average. Heavy lambs $185 to $220 and extra heavy weights reached $260/head. Best priced hogget reached $188/head.

Mutton numbers eased slightly and quality was mixed. Prices cheaper by $12 to $16/head. Medium weight ewes sold from $99 to $150 and heavy crossbred ewes $154 to $201/head. Most averaged around 520c/kg cwt.

Total Yarding:  1671

1670 head were penned and the quality was well back on the previous sale. There were good numbers of weaners although a large percentage were 9 to 11 months of age. A small offering of yearlings and PTIC cows and heifers and around 55 cow and calf units. The weaners sold $200 to $250/head cheaper than the last store sale with the slip in quality a major factor.
Light weaner steers under 200kg sold from $800 to $1160/head. 

Medium weight to 280kg ranged from $990 to $1960 and averaged 680c/kg for the bulk of the cattle. Heavy weaner steers sold to $2210/head. Light heifers $720 to $940 and medium weights $950 to $1640/head. 

Heavy Angus heifers around 320kg topped the weaner sale reaching $2250/head. Very heavy Charolais yearling steers also reached $2250/head and the best price for PTIC heifers reached $2620/head. Cow and calf units ranged between $2400 and $3300/unit.

Numbers were similar and the quality varied. Yearling steers were best supplied and there were several larger runs of steers that suited feeders. Yearling heifers were very limited. Only reasonable numbers of prime yearlings and grown steers were offered. Around 100 cows were penned in a market that sold to a dearer trend with the exception of the yearling heifers.

Light weaner steers reached 638c/kg and feeder steers were upto 20c dearer mostly in the larger runs, medium weights sold to 637c and heavy weights 503c to 570c/kg. The limited supply of heifers were cheaper and sold between 450c and 490c for heifers to feed on. Trade cattle lifted 15c with steers selling from 470c to 572c/kg.

Prime grown steers gained 10c with most selling from 465c to 477c/kg. Cows were also gained 8c to 10c with the heavy 3 and 4 score cows 312c to 345c/kg. Medium weights ranged from 270c to 336c/kg for the better 2 and 3 score cows.

There was a slight decrease in lamb numbers and the quality was plain with an increase in secondary lambs that were lacking cover. There were a few mostly heavy lambs that were well finished and these lambs sold to a dearer trend while most lambs were $10 to $15 cheaper with processors showing little competition. Trade lambs were best supplied along with some lighter store lambs and a few good heavy lambs.
 
Restockers paid upto $147/head for lambs to return to the paddock. Medium and heavy trade lambs sold from $121 to $177 and the 22 to 24kg lambs $171 to $195/head. Heavy lambs to 26kg cwt $186 to $200 and lambs upto 32kg cwt $207 to $225/head. The secondary lambs averaged from 600c to 700c/kg and the betters heavy weights 760c to 800c/kg on average. The best priced hogget reached $208/head. Light trade Merinos sold from $110 to $124/head. 

Mutton numbers were similar and the quality remains mixed and prices fell $20 to $30/head. Medium weight ewes $126 to $148/head. Heavy crossbred ewes $170 to $190 and Merino sold to $228. A good run of shorn Merino wethers reached $188/head.
