Market Report 28 August 2024

Prime Sheep and Lamb

Lamb numbers eased and the quality was mostly plain with the majority of the lambs lacking cover and carrying a long skin. There was a limited supply of well finished trade and heavy lambs and only a few new season lambs.

New season lambs reached $195/head. Secondary old lambs were $5 to $10/head cheaper with 2 score lambs to 16kg selling from $72 to $117/head. Secondary trade lambs sold from $120 to $143/head. The good prime trades 20 to 24kg sold from $155 to $186/head and averaged 760c to 800c/kg cwt. Prime heavy weights were limited but in demand with a pen 61 heavy lambs reaching $270/head or 885c/kg, three or four other pens also sold up to or near this rate. The bulk of the heavy weights ranged from $180 to $220/head and averaged 810c/kg.

Mutton numbers lifted and quality was mixed. Prices were $7 to $8 dearer on the ewes and a few larger runs of Merino wethers were firm. Merino ewes sold to $126 and crossbred ewes $128/head. Most of the better mutton averaged from 370c to 395c/kg cwt.
