Market Report – Prime Sheep & Lamb – 19 October

Today at SELX 15,685 sheep and lambs were yarded, with the market softer across all categories. The quality of new season lambs showed freshness with primarily trade weights penned, along with a good supply of feeder and store lambs. The mutton was represented by all weights and categories, with some exceptional heavy shorn Wethers being penned. Not all processors operated due to inflated numbers across the state, with the countryside starting to dry out. Overall the quality of the yarding is starting to reflect the promising season unfolding around the region.

Prime Lamb & Sheep – 24 April 2024Total Yarding: 6776Lamb numbers eased and the quality remains mixed. There were plenty of light and secondary trade lambs and only a small run of trade weight lambs with a good fat cover. Heavy lambs were limited. The market sold to stronger trends with gains of $9 to $12 on the light and secondary trade lambs and the better trade lambs were $13 to $16 stronger. The limited supply of heavy weights were firm. Light 2 score processing lambs sold from $55 to $116/head. The medium and heavy trade weights 20 to 24kg ranged from $135 to 168/head averaging 680c with the best out to 725c/kg for second cross lambs. The 24 to 26kg lambs $169 to $174/head or 670c/kg and 26kg and heavier reached $198/head. The best of the hoggets reached $135/head. Mutton numbers eased and the quality remains mixed, but prices lifted $10 to $15/head.
