Please be advised that next week's Monthly Store Cattle Sale has been cancelled due to lack of numbers.

Prime Sheep & Lamb - 17 July 2024

Total Yarding: 9600 (-3465) | Sheep Yarding: 3300 (-2665) | Lamb Yarding: 6300 (-800)

Lamb numbers eased and the quality was plainer with only a limited number of prime lambs and plenty of lambs that lack cover. The best quality lambs were the heavy and extra heavy weights with the trade and light lambs very mixed in quality and condition. The market sold to a mostly stronger trend.

The 2 score processing lambs sold from $62 to $116/head and the light trades to 20kg $126 to $166/head to average 750c/kg. The trade lambs 20 to 24kg sold from $154 to $214/head and averaged 790c to 820c/kg with the very neat lambs ranging from 840c to 880c/kg. Heavy lambs were $3 dearer selling between $201 and $236/head. Heavy lambs to 30kg sold from $200 to $243 and extra heavy weights reached $289/head and averaged 840c/kg. The best priced hogget reached $183/head.

Mutton numbers eased and the quality was very mixed but prices lifted $6 to $9 across the medium and heavy mutton. Medium weight ewes sold from$75 to $122 and heavy crossbreds $133 to $174/head. Best of the Merinos reached $139/head and most of the better mutton averaged 470c to 500c/kg cwt.

The major highlight of today’s sale was that the cow market was extremely strong.Heavy prime cows reached 325c, and the leaner types sold from 160c to 278c/kg. Cows made up over half of the increased yarding of 1020 mixed quality cattle. There were a few good pens of trade yearlings, along with some good runs of feeder heifers. There was an increased number of secondary cattle. All the usual buyers were operating, with strong demand for well-bred and finished cattle, but less demand for plainer stock.

Trade yearlings reached 355c, to average 320c/kg. Feeder steers were mostly firm, selling from 255c to 368, and heifers to feed lifted 6c, making from 230c to 314c/kg. There was still keen interest from restockers for the better types, with the steers topping at 345c, however got down to 80c/kg. There were similar trends for the heifers, selling from 70c to 300c /kg.

Heavy grown cattle were firm to a few cents dearer, with the steers ranging from 265c to 376c, and heifers made from 255c to 348c/kg. Heavy bulls to process were over 20c better, selling from 180c to 265c/kg.

There was an increase in lambs and the quality was a little better with more heavy trade and heavy lambs penned. There still were plenty of trade weights and lighter lambs that lacked cover. Not all the usual buyers were operating and the market sold to dearer trends.

The 2 score processing lambs to 16kg were $12 dearer selling from $75 to $136/head. Trade weights lifted around $16 and the 20 to 24kg lambs ranged from $152 to $215/head for the 3 and 4 scores, lambs 24 to 26kg sold from $192 to $226/head and averaged between 830c and 860c/kg. Secondary lambs averaged 730c to 750c/kg cwt. Heavy lambs to 30kg sold from $218 to $265 and extra heavy weights reached $272/head. The best priced hogget reached $160/head.

Mutton numbers were similar and the quality varied. Prices were on average $10 to $12/head dearer. Medium weight ewes sold from $54 to $119/head. Heavy crossbreds ranged from $126 to $150 and heavy Merino ewes reached $148 and wethers $156/head. Most averaged between 400c to 460c/kg cwt.
